Hello All
The team is doing very well on the January team challenge -- especially since most people have been working around business travel and the usual interesting personal/family/health balancing acts. One even wants to row on the water in Florida rather than stare at a television while indoors on an erg -- imagine!
With all our personal agendas, Marblehead is holding its own here in Concept2 Challenge-land. To date our stats make us
• 26th of 45 On-Water teams with 6-20 people
• 43nd of 88 for all On-Water teams -- some have more than 100 people rowing, btw
• 110th of 330 of all types of teams and sizes - up from 145 last week
Lots of encouraging emails sharing tips and techniques, exercises to relieve those achy hamstrings, and music suggestions to erg by
February is fast approaching which means Spring and Open Water is closer, too. Hope you all can Join us and Rejoin us for the next challenge
Here is the team
ERG ON!

A PRIMER FOR LIFE-NICE KICK OFF THOUGHT FOR 2012
1. Positive Thinking.
There is considerable evidence that having a positive, optimistic, can-do frame of mind will lead to much better outcomes in many circumstances than having a negative, pessimistic or cynical approach. Positive thinkers generally do better, live longer, and are healthier and happier.
2. Focus, Goal Setting and Planning.
There are many benefits in having a clear focus on what you want to achieve, in setting goals, in measuring progress against those goals and in taking corrective actions when you fall short.
3. Visualization.
Visualising a successful action can assist you to achieve it. If you are nervous about making a speech then visualizing yourself giving a confident, dynamic performance will help you to do just that.
4. Self-Belief.
Most successful people have enormous self-belief. They know that they have something special to offer and that they can achieve great things. They use this self-belief as the basis on which to build the plans
5. An Attitude of Gratitude.
Most of us have a great deal to be thankful for. Counting our blessings and giving thanks help put ours lives into perspective and engender a positive frame of mind.

PRESIDENT'S "STATE OF THE STATE" ADDRESS RNR 1ST GENERAL MEETING
Hello fellow Rockers and Welcome
As your President for the past two years I have been given the dubious honor of standing before you today which I believe to be an historic occasion for our club. That is our 1st Annual All Club General Meeting.
I appreciate the fact that so many of you took the time out of I’m sure busy schedules to come down and be with us today.
I think you’ll find the next almost two hours to be informative as well as motivational uplifting and fun.
At least that is the hopes and goal of our Board members.
But let me now take a small pause from my written remarks to officially introduce to all you members the group that does the yeoman work of making this club successful.
Starting with my Officers and followed by the Committee Chairs (Please feel free to applause at will. No need to wait till the end)
1) Jay Paris- Vice President and Charter Member.
a. Jay has been with the club since its inception five years ago. Having rowed competitively on the Charles River since the age fourteen, he has the talent and understanding of club culture that has helped shaped our core values and club mission.
2) Jean Verbridge- Treasurer and Charter Member.
a. Where does all the money go? If you need to ask, Jean is the one to provide the answers. She does a great job keeping the founders from spending too much of the cookie jar with the hopes we have money left over to capital equipment (IE BOATS and stuff). Ya we like that type of purchases
3) Stephanie Brocoum- Secretary
a. The queen of multi-tasking Stephanie even with her relatively new high powered day time job finds the time to provide the organizational skills dramatically lacking in yours truly. Thereby keeping us on track with minutes, agendas and best of all those individual “To do” list.
4) Terrie Leake- Chair Social Committee and Charter Member
a. Having fun yet? Adventure Rows, Pirate Bashes, Community events and even social engagements right at the dock. She is the wizard behind the RnR Enthos. Keeps the smile on all our faces and makes us Row hard but…Rock Harder!!
5) Thomas Vogel-Chair, Membership Committee
a. As chair of new members, Thomas is one of the first faces our Newbies meet at the club. His rowing start began at the age of 10 on the Neckar River in his native Germany. So many gifts, so little time. Thomas generous spirit. good nature and talent has been a wonderful addition these last three plus years.
6) Emily Greten- Safety Captain and Coach
a. Not too many clubs can boast a coach that has received medals at Masters on a National and World level. We are so very fortunate that she and Dave have chosen Marblehead as their home port. Looking to rowing better or just starting out Coach Em is the one to contact.
7) Charlie Chas Harak- Sunday Rowing Czar and Charter Member
a. Always there to keep the pods together on the water with a NOSH at the dock waiting upon your return. Charlie Chas Harak has done a spectacular job in the role of Sunday Rowing Czar and the growth of the Sunday rows is a testimonial to his dedication to the club.
8) Lastly Paul Mazonson- Co-Founder
a. Little can be added to this gentleman’s list of accomplishments. From the clubs earliest conception our Co-founder and fearless leader has laid the ground work for the club’s success. Some even say that his face was used as the portrait behind our logo. Friend , confidant and dare I forget the best BERTHA Trailer Driver in the club. RocknRow would be little more than a dream if not for his vision and foresight. Give it up for Paul M.
So A little about today’s agenda
1) As one of my last acts as your 1st club’s president I hope to provide you with the club’s “State of the State address”.
2) This will be followed up by a Finance Report from our esteemed club treasurer Jean Verbridge
3) Next there will be about a 30 minute Q and A discussion lead by our VP Jay Paris. Hopefully we can dispel some of the myths surrounding our club.
4) Secretary Stephanie Brocoum will lead us through the elections of officers and board which shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes
5) We will then conclude with a Awards and Recognition ceremony lead by your Co-founder Paul and VP Jay.
But before we begin, let’s kick-off this with a small slide show presentation we think you’ll enjoy.
(SLIDE SHOW)
OUR MISSION STATEMENT
Supporting the physical, mental and spiritual benefits of open water rowing while building long lasting bonds of friendship among its members.
I think we pretty much nailed it. Don’t you agree?
So how did all this stuff that we refer to as RocknRow begin.
While I know today’s meeting is all about the present and the future but if you would indulge me just for a moment I would like to take a quick trip down memory lane
It’s hard not to share some of our humble beginnings. If nothing else it does provide the backdrop to who we are today.
I was told to get it somewhat brief so here it goes
According to local legend Paul and I met on the water in the summer of 2005. I was in a kayak and he in his Echo “WINGS”.
It was his first time leaving the shelter of the harbor. Coincidence? We don’t think so. I tried a few strokes in his shell off Grace Olivers’s beach. Bought my first Echo “Wilson” two days later.
That summer it was Paulie and I pushing our limits to Childrens, Misery, Tinkers and even Halfway Rock. Places we now take for granted as a common row was a big time deal for us.
We were the Magellan and James Cooke of our universe discovering the limits of our risk and distance.
Fast forward Spring 2006.
I’m recovering from prostate cancer and need a physical goal that went beyond my present issue.
What better than the Blackburn Challenge.
This from two rowers who probably never did average more than a 5-6 mile row. I needed it. Paul agreed to partner up. Of course he said I was crazy at the time.
Who knew that this would be the cornerstone event from which a club vision would materialize.
Again coincidence? Well you already know the answer to that.
Those of you who have been to the Blackburn already know what I’m talking about. Pure energy and adrenalin abounds.
Skinny fast shells rowed by skinned tight athletes with zero body fat buffered by handmade watercrafts of all shapes and sizes handles by hippy looking individuals “Row or die” on their tied died shirts.
Dube smoke waffling out of the Winnebago that has been parked for a couple of days now. Sights, sounds and smells were mesmerizing for a couple of Newbies from Marblehead.
Well you all should know and I will admit here today.
Paul was the brain child behind the club development.
He was the first to recognize that our town with its great history, bays and waterways makes a perfect background setting for a rowing experience.
It was he who believed in the field of dreams. “Build it and they will come”.
But first we need a cool name and a cool logo.
Jake Paul’s son should be credited with both. Greatful Dead Skull and Rose logo fit the Rock part.
Add a couple of rowing oars through the logo and the MHD town hall in the background. Looks like a rowing club to us.
Albeit not your normal, collegiate, Charles river type of rowing club. RocknRow was destined from its beginning to be the “other guys”.
Oh but wait we still needed other things like….
Boats, racks, storage facilities, a place to launch. We figure that these would all come in good time. The stars would naturally align. Right now we need some cool RnR gear to wear around town and on the water.
Let we pause from this narrative to share a little bit about our “Pirate Culture”
This like most things that have happen in the club was purely a serendipitous event.
Our beloved “Skull and Roses” icon was quickly confused by most to be a pirate skull by those in town.
Someone once shared with me that the Federation of Pirates were once considered the earliest form of democracy were “A loosely formed group of individuals with an unusual set of code and ethics” Words like Anarchy, Parlay Hmmmm… That sounds about right. Dress up and act a little crazy.
That can work very nicely into the RnR culture. Pirates we became.
Charity and community involvement were the two other cornerstones of our club’s good works. They continue to foster and grow
To summarize in the last five years and fast forward to the present
1) We as an organization raised over $150,000 for different organizations
a. such as Hospice, Dana Farber, Boston Med Flight, Life Bridges and other worthy charities.
2) We have even spawned another rowing experience with Mary Ellen’s Commercial Adventure.
a. Rowing for All and the Little Harbor Boat House.
3) Have been honored by Marblehead Chamber of Commerce and the 2011 Harbor Award,
a. Written about in Marblehead Magazine.
b. Seen on Marblehead Cable.
c. Been on the cover of Alden’s Website
4) Conducted 5 Community Rowing Days over the same number of years introducing
a. over 200 people into the sport
b. Some of which are listening to this today
5) Brought 11 people to this year’s Blackburn Challenge
a. Set course record in the Quad division
b. Help create a National Champion in the Women’s Touring.
c. Pretty much took every metal in the Marblehead Great Race
6) Launch a new RNR fully integrated website
a. and joined the Digital age with our Club Facepage.
b. BTW we have todate 47 people who “Liked” us 30 of which are not members of our club
c. Meanwhile our trusty Blog of 4 years has had over 400 entries and 12,000 visits.
7) Our fifth season club membership hovered just over 40 members
a. More critically over half our club were active rowers
i. (someone who we define as rowing 2-3 times a week)
8) We racked up 10 club shells and another 15 privates thanks to Marblehead Trading Company.
a. Ralph Anderson owner and Tom LeBeuf the yard manager.
9) Collectively rowed over 2,000 NM.
a. (and I think I’m being conservative with this estimate)
10) Our “Shameless Plug” division of RnR who’s unabashedly seeks positive publicity in the local and surrounding publications monthly during the rowing season.
a. It has successful place multiple articles about our club and it’s doings.
b. Including today’s general meeting (so let’s not forget that photo opp)
11) Our “Shameless Commerce” division is here today.
a. I’m sure you all need another hat or long sleeve t-shirt before you go
12) As recently as last month Brian’s e-mail request about Concept 2 erging
a. sparked a flurry of responses which eventually led to 15 club members erging their way to 1 million meters to help raise money in the Concept 2 Holiday Challenge.
b. And more is on its way for January. Pal has taken the lead from fearless leader Frank. 11 Rockers have signed up to date for a virtual erg challenge. 184,000 meters rowed in the 1st week of the event.
13) And even something as small as the 15 sleeping bags we collected for the Salem Shelter makes a difference.
But enough about our past and present. It’s time to look at the future. From where I stand it looks bright. Very Bright.
To coin author Malcolm Gladwell, 2012 will be a Tipping Point year for RocknRow. We have great momentum among our faithful core disciples.
1) It will be filled with members who are entering their third/fourth year with the club
a. and have matured in to wonderful rowers.
b. Bookended by a new group of Newbies that are anxious to learn about all the fun we have.
2) We have so much great talent among our Board of Directors and Officers.
a. Dedicated people all of them to making this club we call RnR successful.
3) There is talk about new boats
a. Yes maybe a MAAS Aero),
b. new rowing experiences locally and away.
4) Of course there will be another Community Rowing Day,
a. as well as a Spring Open House,
b. Sunday Rows, lessons,
c. Mid-summer parties and Pirate Bashes.
i. All well attended by the faithful.
5) But let’s us not also forget the “Blessing of The Fleet”
a. an incredible uplifting event
b. led annually by our gifted spiritual leader Kathie Mazonson.
6) And Who’s going to the Blackburn this year?
a. Can I see a raise of hands?
b. A worthy goal for any rower among us.
7) Lastly and probably most important there is you.
a. Our core Rockers here today.
b. Our disciples to the sport of recreational salt water rowing.
c. You are the future of the club’s success.
d. Judging from those of you who are attending today’s General Meeting I’d say we are in good hands.
Thank you for your love and support of this Crazy Club we call RocknRow.
Blessing to you all
