3RD NEWBIE ROW TURNED INTO A "SURVIVAL ROW"

Last evening's "Survival Row" is one for the record books. What a blast!!! Attached are the 7 brave pirates who mastered the high seas yesterday.

Cheers,

  1. What's a "Survival Row," you ask?

When the wind is blowing a steady 10-12 mph out of the SSE, two well-attended competitive sailing races underway, and frenetic motor boat traffic doubling by the minute, we "Newbies" go out for a Survival Row led by our dauntless Capt Jack. Just getting out from behind Brown's was an exercise in stamina and patience, but the 3-4 ft swells that awaited us outside Little Harbor was a new experience. The waves crashed upon us relentlessly while "the mighty seven" slogged our way around the corner en route to Salem Harbor. Nothing to do but row steady, surf the swells, avoid the rocks, and yell "Woo Hoo!" to truly live in the moment. (Disneyland ain't got nothin'on us.) I got my first taste of just how solid the Echos are. Only once did I think I might flip but that was due to bad oar placement. Once deep inside our neighboring harbor, the water calmed down, however, the next skill we worked on was how to spot and avoid the plentiful moorings, boats and docks dotting our seascape. (We tried to stay in the wind shadow closer to land.) It was kind of like taking your driver's test all over again, but without a rearview mirror. My neck is still sore today. We got down as far as the new pier at Stramski Park, and then turned around to do it all over again homeward bound. An epic row!

Shelia Rich's comment upon dockside arrival was, "That was the roughest row I have been on since rowing with RnR. At one point I wondered if anyone had ever puked while rowing." LOL!!!

I will venture out more confident in my shell because of our adventure yesterday evening. It was a complete blast! Thank you, all, for a great time!!
